Kelly Clarkson, Meaning of Life © AtlanticKelly Clarkson returns with feisty, throwback record “Love So Soft,” a promo single for her highly-anticipated seventh album, ‘Meaning of Life.’

Kelly Clarkson ranks as one of the most consistent female pop artists without question.  Clarkson has an incredibly versatile voice that “could sing the phone book,” to quote the former American Idol judges. After a two-year hiatus, the original American Idol winner returns with Meaning of Life, her seventh album (including holiday album, Wrapped in Red). With the announcement of Meaning of Life, Clarkson released two singles: “Love So Soft” and “Move You.”

“Love So Soft” serves as the feistiest of the two singles released upon the announcement of Meaning of Life. Kelly Clarkson shows off mad personality on this soulful pop joint.  There are retro cues and vibes on this minor-key pop record, which prove to be a perfect match for Clarkson. Such cues include the punchy, boxy drums, gospel-driven backing vocals, and  the horns.  It’s not all old-school. The repetitive, biting chorus is modern, in line with the gimmicky pop that dominates the industry these days.

The best feature of “Love So Soft” are the vocals.  Simply put, Clarkson is a treasure.  Her pitch is great, her tone ripe, and the nuances add the cherry on top.  Honestly, there are no glaring flaws.  If you have to pick one, it’s that “Love So Soft” provides under three minutes of greatness.  We need more of that sick falsetto she shows off towards the end.

Final Thoughts

What more is there to say? Kelly Clarkson is a beast.  Performance after performance, song after song, and album after album, she continues to exceed expectations.  Deep into her career, she sounds as ripe as ever on “Love So Soft.”  She’s a wife, a mom, and she’s 35.  Wow, she still sounds 20!
