Keith Urban, Female © CapitolKeith Urban returns with a thoughtful, uplifting, and timely, new single, “Female.” “Female” celebrates the value of women.

Keith Urban returns with a timely, new single, entitled “Female.” “Female” just isn’t any regular old song – it has deeper meaning that’s relevant to the times. Urban isn’t a co-writer – the song was penned by renowned country songwriters Shane McAnally, Ross Copperman, and Nicolle Galyon.

“Female” possesses light country production that’s anchored by a pop beat.  Essentially, it is amounts to country-pop, for lack of a better description.  Vocally, Keith Urban sounds well-rounded, infusing a dash of country twang. Ultimately, he doesn’t sound ‘country,’ yet he also doesn’t sound like a ‘pop’ artist either.  Nonetheless, he delivers solid, emotional vocals, which capture the feminine sensibilities of the lyrics.

On the second half of the first verse, Urban sings:

“When you hear a song that they play saying you run the world / Do you believe it? / Will you live to see it?”

Later, on the second verse, more questions are posed:

“When somebody laughs and implies that she asked for it / Just because she was wearing a skirt / Now is that how it works?”

All these questions are related to the female experience and being treated with the utmost respect. The chorus sums up the theme perfectly:

“Sister, shoulder / Daughter, lover / Healer, broken halo / Mother nature / Fire, suit of armor / Soul survivor, Holy water / Secret keeper, fortune teller / Virgin Mary, scarlet letter / Technicolor river wild / Baby girl, woman, child / Female.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Keith Urban delivers a thoughtful song about the value of women and treating them respectfully. The songwriters do a fantastic job of taking the negative situations of abuse and turning it into a meaningful work of art.
