Kali Uchis, After the Storm © InterscopeUp-and-coming Colombian-American singer Kali Uchis shines on “After the Storm,” the promo single from her forthcoming, 2018 debut album. She’s assisted by Tyler, the Creator and Bootsy Collins.

Could 2018 be the year that 23-year old Kali Uchis breaks through? If single “After the Storm” is any indication, then indeed, 2018 is the Colombian-American R&B musician’s time. “After the Storm” sound vintage from the jump, hearkening back to the sound of 70s soul. Producers BADBADNOTGOOD are owed some credit for the sound (they’re a talented hip-hop-jazz collective in their own right). Bootsy Collins serves up the spoken word intro, furthering the ‘old-school’ vibes of the record.

“Ah / Whatever goes around / Eventually comes back to you / So you gotta be careful, baby / And look both ways / Before you cross my mind.”

Kali Uchis delivers cool, calm, and collected vocals.  Even so, her performance packs punch – there is no shortage of artistry or personality.  Clearly, she’s reflecting on a break-up.

“Did you ever wonder? / Yeah, do you ever wonder / What he might be going through on his own, and / The demons that he’s facing alone.”

Following a fine verse, pre-chorus, and marvelous chorus, Tyler, the Creator enters the picture, offering a tasteful rap.  That’s shocking, but it’s also a testament to the more mature, thoughtful musician we’ve seen of late.

“Kali, what you mean? / I take it offensive / ‘Cause I’m the hottest flower boy / That popped up on the scene / … The Tito to my Randy / Now let’s produce some thrillers / My chocolate wit yo vanilla, uh.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Kali Uchis has ‘her moment’ on “After the Storm.” The collaborators all do a fine job, while never stepping on her toes.  BADBADNOTGOOD deliver stellar production work that fresh despite its vintage nature. Her forthcoming debut album should be a treat.
