Joji, In Tongues © 88rising / EmpireR&B artist Joji drops a compelling, moody gem with “Will He,” the promo single from his debut EP, ‘In Tongues’ (November 3).

Filthy Frank indeed is filthy on YouTube.  However, this review has nothing to do with Filthy Frank – this is about Joji.  Joji has greater musical aspirations as opposed to the shock value and utter ridiculousness of Filthy Frank… we assume. He drops “Will He,” a single from his EP, In Tongues (November 3).

Joji opens enigmatically; it’s melancholy, indulgent, and heavy.  Despite the weight carried by the sound and vibe, the sound is very beautiful. This is well-produced and the vibe can’t be iterated enough.  Joji delivers respectable vocals, singing the moody lyrics with passion and authenticity.  Listening, you might not call him the most distinct or electrifying vocalist, but he successfully conveys his feelings and the narrative.  That narrative is ex-girl is with a new boy and it’s not Joji.

“Cause I don’t need to know / I just wanna make sure you’re okay (okay) / I don’t need to know / I just wanna make sure you’re all safe / All safe, all safe.”

For the most part, “Will He” is a treat.  There are some nitpicks.  It’s quite indulgent and lethargic, so there’s nothing infectious or inviting about this record. With the lethargy of this record, even though it clocks in under three-and-a-half-minutes, it feels longer.  It’s not excessive, but nothing breaks things up providing a change of pace or something beyond what’s offered during the majority of the song. In other words, some variation wouldn’t have hurt.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Joji has a winner on his hands with “Will He.” The vibe carries this single far.  It could use some more variation – something to increase the momentum – but there’s a lot to like regardless. In Tongues should be an intriguing affair.
