British pop singer James Arthur recently released his sophomore album, Back from the Edge.   “Can I Be Him” serves as one of the singles from the album.  It ends up being a well-written, polished record.

Arthur showcases nice vocals throughout the course of “Can I Be Him.” He sounds expressive, yearning, and flaunts the cracks in his voice. Additionally, the song is well-produced overall – never overdone, beginning simply and building up more on the chorus. This record never loses control.  Arthur remains in the driver’s seat, giving enough oomph at just the right time.  The chorus is one of the best moments of the record:

“I swear that very word you sing / you wrote them for me / like it was a private show / But I know you never saw me / when the lights come on and I’m on my own / will you be there to sing it again / could I be the one you talk about in all your stories / can I be him.”

Final Thoughts

Overall, James Arthur delivers the good on “Can I Be Him.” His vocals are exceptional, showcasing the distinctiveness of his instrument. Additionally, the songwriting is strong, particularly the chorus. Sound by all means. This persuades the listener to check out his full-length album.
