Is “Savior,” the new single by Iggy Azalea a ‘savior’ to her diminishing career? Maybe, maybe not, but the Quavo-assisted single is better than “Team” or “Mo Bounce.”

In 2014, Iggy Azalea had a terrific year.  Her single “Fancy” (featuring Charli XCX) made her a breakout star. Beyond “Fancy,” she had another big hit with “Black Widow” (featuring Rita Ora). Since her breakthrough album, The New Classic, it’s been tough sledding for the rapper.  She’s gotta be hopeful that new single “Savior,” featuring Quavo will reignite a diminished flame.

“Savior” opens with bright, exuberant synths and tropically-tinged production work. Despite the ‘optimistic’ sound, “Savior” is set in a minor key. Iggy Azalea delivers agile, pop-rap on the first verse, contrasting her hard-nosed, tougher persona. Quavo follows the verse, dropping the catchy, if simple sung chorus.

“I been lookin’ for a savior / I been lookin’ for a savior / I been lookin’ for a realone to hold on to / I been lookin’ for a savior…”

The second verse by Azalea is more straightforward rap as opposed to pop-rap. The pre-chorus, much like the first, retains its pop sensibilities.  Following the second Quavo hook, Azalea serves up a brief bridge – a small but welcome contrast.

Final Thoughts

Will “Savior” be a savior for the career of Iggy Azalea? Um, that’s arguable, but “Savior” definitely trumps the more lackadaisical she’s released post-The New Classic (looking at you “Team” and “Mo Bounce”).  “Savior” isn’t the second coming – No Jesus here – but Azalea and Quavo have their moments.
