Holly Miranda, Mutual Horse © DangerbirdNew York alternative musician Holly Miranda thrills on “Golden Spiral,” a promo single from her fourth solo releases, ‘Mutual Horse,’ arriving February 23, 2018.

They say that every song has a story. The inception of “Golden Spiral,” a single from New York alternative musician Holly Miranda, is quite interesting. “Golden Spiral” serves as a promo single from her fourth solo release, Mutual Horse (February 23, 2018).  In addition to singing, Miranda began playing piano at age six, and guitar at the age of 14.  At 16, she began her professional career, a career approaching 20 years! Focusing on the record at hand, Miranda shares that it began as a loop. A few lyrics, sung by her best friend, Ambrosia, served as the catalyst for a terrific song.

“Golden Spiral” commences enigmatically with a number of unique sounds and sound effects. Approximately15 seconds in, the record stabilizes with a head-nodding groove.  The sound blends elements of rock, indie, and singer-songwriter. There’s also a touch of soul, thanks to the horns, particularly the baritone sax. Vocally, Holly Miranda delivers an alluring, expressive vocal performance. She’s relatively even-keel, eschewing histrionics in favor of a subtler, yet equally compelling performance.  Interestingly, Miranda’s vocal have some parallels to a jazz vocal performance – the control and the emphasis on each and every note.

The production and vocals are big-time selling points for “Golden Spiral.” Additionally, the songwriting is superb, particularly the catchy chorus, which meshes purposely with the aforementioned head-nodding, infectious groove. This isn’t a commercial record, but wider audiences can relate to the cues that latch – groove, repetition, and a unique overall sound.

Final Thoughts

Holly Miranda clearly deserves some love.  “Golden Spiral” checks off box after box.  Great vocals, great production, and great songwriting.  Furthermore, it’s distinct, something that can’t be said about the majority of music in 2018.
