Gucci Mane, Mr. Davis © AtlanticThe ever-prolific Gucci Mane returns with a new single, “I Get the Bag.”  He enlists fellow prolific rappers Migos for the assist.

Gucci Mane has no shortage of material – understatement.  Since his release from prison in 2016, the southern rapper has been one of the most prolific artists in the music industry.  He released Everybody Looking, WOPTOBER, The Return of East Atlanta Santa, and Droptopwop between July 2016 and the publication time.  He continues to build his discography with another single, “I Get the Bag” featuring Migos.  Migos aren’t doing too bad for themselves either.  “I Get the Bag” hails from his new album, Mr. Davis (September 15).

“I Get the Bag” checks off most boxes for a Gucci Mane record.  The production work is slick AF, firmly planted in the southern rap idiom.  The tempo is slow, the drums have the trap written all over them.  In regards to his rapping, Gucci remains relaxed, even rapping alongside the Migos. No, he’s not quite as mushed-mouthed as he is sometimes, but he doesn’t dramatically switch-things up, even when incorporating some triplet rhythms into his rhymes.

Speaking of Migos, only two appear on “I Get the Bag” – Quavo and Takeoff.  Interestingly, Offset was the Migo left off from A$AP Ferg single, “Nasty (Who Dat)”.  Even with just two members of the trio, they arguably overpower Gucci Mane.  Quavo, who’s been the most ubiquitous of the bunch, handles the hook.

“Yeah
You get the bang and fumble it, I get the bag and flip it and tumble it
Straight out the lot, 300 cash, and the car came with a blunt in it
Lil mama a thot, and she got ass, and she gon’ fuck up a bag
Pull up to the spot, living too fast, droppin’ the dope in the stash…”

Then, rather than Gucci handling the first verse, it falls in the hands of Takeoff.  That’s a lot of Migos, and tough to remain as the ‘star of the show.’ Making it even tougher is when Takeoff delivers a druggy, sound verse, followed by a Quavo hook.  Gucci Mane does alright for himself on the second verse, but masturbation may never be an optimal choice for any song.

“I’m fascinated two bitches so fine that I masturbated.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, with “I Get the Bag,” we’ve been there, done that with Gucci Mane, as well as Migos. Both have been among the most saturated rappers of 2017, so it’s hard to get too pumped up for a new song. This is okay, but not game changing.
