Gregg Allman, Southern Blood © RounderThe late, great Gregg Allman leaves a gem on “My Only True Friend,” the promo single from his final, posthumous studio album, ‘Southern Blood.’

It’s always sad to see a music legend pass away.  Even though you don’t personally know that legend, you feel like you’ve been acquainted with them through their craft – the music.  Gregg Allman added to the list of sadness in 2017, passing away at the end of May.  Even so, not only does his legacy live on, but Allman also left a gift to the world – one final album! Southern Blood arrives September 8, with a bit more emotion behind it considering its posthumous release status.  Three singles were released in advance of Southern Blood, including “My Only True Friend.”

“My Only True Friend” packs a punch the first time you hear it.  First of all, it’s the opening track to Southern Blood.  Although it lasts north of six minutes in duration, it’s a glorious six minutes to say the least.  Allman sounds top-rate, singing emotionally, soulfully, and exemplifying the southern rock spirit.  In addition to superb vocals by the late, great Allman, the songwriting is on-point, and the production is magnificent.  Focusing on the production, there are acoustic and electric guitars working in tandem, soulful organ, piano, and later, horns.  The whole shebang creates an experience where the ear candy spoils the listeners.  We don’t deserve this awesomeness!

Cons? No way Jose! “My Only True Friend” is a best of record.  There’s country, rock, blues, and soul.  There’s instrumental features, namely the rousing electric guitar soloing.  Sure, six minutes is ambitious for any song, but this is the lengthy number you don’t want to end.

Final Thoughts

Gregg Allman left a gem with “My Only True Friend.”  If Southern Blood is as good as “My Only True Friend,” the late musician really outdid himself.  Truly, everything is sound on this gem.
