Grace VanderWaal, Just the Beginning © Columbia13-year old Grace VanderWaal shines on “Moonlight,” the opening song and promo single from her debut album, Just the Beginning (November 3).

Truly, America’s Got TalentGrace VanderWaal, a mere kid, proved that, winning the popular television show.  The thing is, not only did she win a reality competition, she truly possesses talent – she’s got chops.  After releasing a debut EP in 2016, Perfectly Imperfect, she arrives in 2017 with her full-length debut album, Just the Beginning.  In advance of Just the Beginning, she dropped several teaser songs, including promo single “Moonlight.”

VanderWaal has a beautiful voice, particularly considering her age. Her tone is distinct – the cracks and nuances provide plenty of character on “Moonlight.”  In addition to how impressive VanderWaal is as a 13-year-old, the song is incredibly enjoyable.  The production keeps things simple, with the signature ukulele-driven sound preserved.  This simplicity is also smart so that it doesn’t overpower or take away from the feature – Grace herself.

The form of “Moonlight” is rock-solid.  It’s comprised of verses, pre-chorus, chorus, post-chorus, and bridge.  The pre-chorus sets up and foreshadows an incredibly fun and catchy chorus, the highlight of the song.

“Remember last year when you told me / To always stay here and never leave me / The light from your eyes made it feel like / We-e-e were dancing in the moonlight.”

The bridge is brief, yet a great contrast to everything that precedes it.

“I, I, I, miss those memories / We used to share / Just you and me.”

Final Thoughts

Are there any glaring cons? No. For a 13-year old who’s just beginning a promising music career, “Moonlight” is just that – promising.  All in all, Grace VanderWaal delivers.
