1. EDEN, ā€œGoldā€

vertigo ā€¢ Astralwerks ā€¢ 2018

EDEN, Vertigo Ā© Astralwerksā€œNo more, call it what you want / Call it what you want but I call it growing up and Iā€™m done.ā€Ā  Alternative-electro musician EDEN (Johnathon Ng) delivers honest, passionate vocals on ā€œgoldā€,Ā a highlight from his 2018 album, vertigo. Initially a guitar-driven, singer-songwriter love song, eventually, electronic production cues transform ā€œgoldā€ into something even grander ā€“ better yet, more golden.

2. Vance Joy, ā€œLike Goldā€

Nation of Two ā€¢ Atlantic ā€¢ 2018

Vance Joy, Nation of Two Ā© AtlanticUp-and-coming Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy delivers a thoughtful record,ā€œLike Goldā€,Ā which appears on his 2018 sophomore album, Nation of Two. ā€œLike Goldā€ finds Joy reminiscing on a past relationship.

ā€œIf I wait ā€˜til it feels right
Iā€™ll be waiting my whole life
Closing my eyes, remember how we were like.ā€

Throughout the course of the record, his lyrics pack a punch.Ā  The best moment of ā€œLike Goldā€ is the chorus, which is catchy and well-written.

ā€œGold, when you see me
Hi, if you need me
Babe, thatā€™s the way it was
Thatā€™s the history
Blue, how we used to roar
Like an open fire
Thatā€™s the way it was
But thatā€™s history.ā€

3. BROCKHAMPTON, ā€œGOLDā€

SATURATION ā€¢ EMPIRE ā€¢ 2017

BROCKHAMPTON, SATURATION Ā© EMPIREā€œKeep a gold chain on my neck / Fly as a jet, boy, better treat me with respect.ā€ Left-field, hip-hop boyband band BROCKHAMPTON had quite the year in 2017, releasing their first three albums: SATURATION, SATURATION II, and SATURATION III.Ā  Their golden song, ā€œGOLDā€ appears as the second song on the first of their three albums, SATURATION. Ā The best way to describe this joint is as a flex-fest to the nth degree. ā€œRick James, I get glitter on my eyelids.ā€

4. Foo Fighters, ā€œConcrete and Goldā€

Concrete and Gold ā€¢ RCA, 2017

Foo Fighters, Concrete and Gold Ā© RCAā€œConcrete and Goldā€ plays the role of title track from the 2017 Foo Fighters studio album.Ā  ā€œConcrete and Goldā€ concludes the effort heavily and intensely.Ā  Dave Grohl sings in an undertone, yet at the same time, he doesnā€™t lack oomph.Ā  The tempo is slow while the song, as a whole, sounds unhurried; relaxed, yet tense.Ā  Ultimately, itā€™s a fitting close given the many different ideas Foo Fighters offer up throughout Concrete and Gold.

5. Machine Gun Kelly, ā€œGolden Godā€

bloom ā€¢ Interscope ā€¢ 2017

Machine Gun Kelly, bloom Ā© Bad Boy/InterscopeMachine Gun Kelly comes loaded on ā€œGolden God.ā€ Safe to say, heā€™s one cocky mofo after ā€œkissing the skyā€ (within the context of album bloom of course).

On ā€œGolden God,ā€ he proclaims himself as a god:

ā€œIā€™m a golden god, Iā€™m a golden god
Iā€™m on the roof of the party
Still almost famous, still all the way dangerous.ā€ Ā

Machine Gun Kelly is ā€œkind of a big dealā€ ā€“ supposedly. He still hasnā€™t achieved indisputable fame, but, in his eyes at least, heā€™s got next.Ā Ā  If nothing else, ā€œGolden Godā€ gives the listener glorious piano lines.Ā  Thatā€™s some sweet ear candy right there.

6. Run the Jewels, ā€œStay Goldā€

Run the Jewels 3 ā€¢ Run the Jewels ā€¢ 2017

Run the Jewels 3 Ā© Run the Jewelsā€œI got a bad girl / I got a brain-with-an-ass girl / She got a mean bop, I got a lean to the way I walk / Dnd they get it like gold / G-O-L-D G-O-L-D, itā€™s goldā€¦ā€ Sigh, ā€œStay Goldā€ features one of the hottest hooks off of Run the Jewels 3. Interestingly, the first portion of the hook also kicks off El-Pā€™s verse, which is a flex-fest encompassing sex and cockiness. Killer Mike elevates the sex to the nth degree on the second verse.Ā  Among his best lines references Stockholm syndrome.

ā€œWeā€™re the crooks, weā€™ll run the jux and kidnap mom from Jazzercise
Get Stockholm syndrome when she get home, momā€™s like, ā€˜I like those fuckinā€™ guys.ā€™ā€

7. Aaron Carter, ā€œFoolā€™s Goldā€

LĆøVĆ« (EP) ā€¢ Sony ā€¢ 2017

Aaron Carter, LĆøVĆ« Ā© SonyAaron Carter opens his comeback project, LĆøVĆ« (EP), with ā€œFoolā€™s Gold.ā€ A slick AF gem, Carter doesnā€™t sound like heā€™s missed a beat. He delivers breathy, rhythmic, sensual vocals that fit the current urban-pop musical climate. For good measure, he sneaks in an f-bomb, that has become commonplace.

ā€œShowed up uninvited, fucking up my vibes with.ā€

The best moment of ā€œFoolā€™s Goldā€ is undoubtedly the chorus, which is infectious:

ā€œLook at you falling
Do you even know what youā€™re falling for?
ā€˜Cause I see you falling
You traded my heart for some foolā€™s gold.ā€

8.Kiiara, ā€œGoldā€

Low Kii Savage ā€¢ Atlantic ā€¢ 2016

Kiiara, Low Kii Savage Ā© AtlanticShould ā€œGoldā€ be described as golden? Eh, probably not. Personally, ā€œGoldā€ is all production, no substance.Ā  For whatever reason, the single by up-and-comer Kiiara shot up the charts in 2016.Ā Ā  Scary! As to how and why, we still donā€™t know.Ā  Being frank, this sounds like a minimalist piece ofā€¦ fill in the ellipsis. No need for deep analysis as thereā€™s nothing deep about ā€œGold.ā€ WTF is she even saying?

Also, just for fun, how about a Pentatonix cover of ā€œGold?ā€ Honestly, makes me like the song a smidge more.

9. Panic! At the Disco, ā€œGolden Daysā€

Death of a Bachelor ā€¢ Fueled by Ramen ā€¢ 2016

Panic! At The Disco, Death Of A Bachelor Ā© Fueled By RamenThroughout the course of the Grammy-nominated Death of a Bachelor by Panic! At the Disco, Brendon Urie continues to showcase his eclecticism and love for musical experimentation. Despite being a deep cut within Death of a Bachelor, ā€œGolden Daysā€ finds Urie exhibiting the power of his pipes. Is the vocal control sketchy? Yes, he has had more refined, controlled vocal performances, but the gift that is his voice is undeniable.

10. Imagine Dragons, ā€œGoldā€

Smoke + Mirrors ā€¢ Interscope ā€¢ 2015

Imagine Dragons, Smoke + Mirrors Ā© InterscopeHow does one properly characterize Imagine Dragons? Rock band, pop band, or alternative band? Regardless, the Vegas band has had its fair share of success over the course of three albums.Ā  One of the standouts from Smoke + Mirrors, the bandā€™s second studio album, was ā€œGold.ā€ ā€œGoldā€ embodies the adage that fame changes everything. Memorable lyrics include ā€œThe curses of diamonds and ringsā€ and ā€œStatues and empires are all at your hands / water to wine and the finest of sands.ā€

On the chorus, Dan Reynolds sings:

ā€œWho can you trust?
When everything, everything
Everything you touch turns to gold, gold, gold.ā€

11. Pentatonix, ā€œRose Goldā€

PentatonixĀ ā€¢ RCA ā€¢ 2015

Pentatonix Ā© RCAPentatonix are known for their a cappella vocals. Furthermore, more often than not, they are noted for their covers of a variety of styles of music and songs.Ā  In 2015, the quintet went the originals route (for the most part), with some great results.Ā  One of the best results came by way of the golden ā€œRose Gold,ā€ characterized by its rhythm and of course, the vocals.

With an award-winning sound in their corner, Pentatonix also wins in the falsetto department, as well as nailing a memorable chorus.

ā€œWe could be timeless, we could be classic
We could be stars, we could be rose gold, rose gold.ā€

12. A$AP Rocky, ā€œGoldieā€

Long. Live. A$AP ā€¢ RCA ā€¢ 2013

A$AP Rocky, Long. Live. A$AP Ā© RCAā€œI said it must be, ā€˜cause a nigga got dough / Extraordinary swag and a mouth full of goldā€¦ā€ The grille-loving ā€œGoldieā€ served as an early promo single from Long. Live. A$AP, the debut album from A$AP Rocky. Produced byĀ Hit-Boy, Rocky embraces pitch-shift, lowering the sound of his voice. Ā Two verses deep, Rockyā€™s flow is agile. As aforementioned, he brags on the hook. According to him, heā€™s hot stuff.

13. Nick Murphy (fmr. Chet Faker), ā€œGoldā€

Built on Glass ā€¢ Downtown ā€¢ 2014

Chet Faker, Built on Glass Ā© Downtownā€œA physical kiss is nothing without it / And you close your eyes to see what itā€™s done / The body that lies is built upon looking / Is all that remains before itā€™s begun.ā€ On his own golden song, Aussie electro singer-songwriter Nick Murphy ā€“ formerly known as Chet Faker ā€“ is infatuated to say the least. The focus is on L-O-V-E-. On ā€œGold,ā€ from Murphyā€™s perspective, he isnā€™t focused on the physical aspects of love, but rather the emotional connection.

As suggested by the aforementioned lyrics, ultimately, an emotional connection is far more important and deeper than empty, meaningless physical contact alone.

ā€œYou gotta know, Iā€™m feeling love
Made of gold, Iā€™ll never love a
ā€˜Nother one, another you
Itā€™s gotta be love, I said it.ā€

14. Prince, ā€œThe Gold Standardā€

Art Official Age ā€¢ Warner ā€¢ 2014

Prince, ART OFFICIAL AGE Ā© Warner BrosSadly, Art Official Age and PLECTRUMELECTRUM were the final two studio albums by Prince to get much notoriety. The best of the two albums was Art Official Age, which featured standouts like ā€œBreakdown,ā€ ā€œThis Could Be Us,ā€ and ā€œFunknroll.ā€ Even so, there was room for another enjoyable performance with ā€œThe Gold Standard.ā€ Here, The Purple One allures with a ripe falsetto, arguably the closest to his heyday. The six-minute record is tight, rhythmic and funky to the nth degree.

15. Twenty One Pilots, ā€œHouse of Goldā€

Vessels ā€¢ Fueled by Ramen ā€¢ 2013

Twenty One Pilots, Vessel Ā© RamenTwenty One Pilots (Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun) delivers some substance on the touching ā€œHouse of Gold.ā€ Written in straight-forward fashion, Joseph has a conversation with his mom ā€“ within the context of the song that is. ā€œShe asked me, ā€˜son, when I grow old / Will you buy me a house of gold,ā€ Joseph sings from his momā€™s perspective.Ā  He later replies (as himself), ā€œI will make you the queen of everything you see / Iā€™ll put you on the map / Iā€™ll cure you of disease.ā€

16. Wale, ā€œGolden Salvation (Jesus Piece)ā€

The Gifted ā€¢ Atlantic ā€¢ 2013

Wale, The Gifted Ā© AtlanticYears before rapping about ā€œFashion Weekā€ and dumbing things down on his 2017 album Shine, Wale delivers some clever wordplay on ā€œGolden Salvation (Jesus Piece).ā€ ā€œGolden Salvation (Jesus Piece) was one of the gems from his 2013, no. 1 album, The Gifted.Ā  A material versus spiritual effort, the play on words is ā€œpieceā€ versus ā€œpieceā€ as in Jesus piece (golden jewelry) and Jesus peace (more golden salvation).

17. Trinidad James, ā€œAll Gold Everythingā€

Donā€™t Be S.A.F.E ā€¢Ā Def Jam ā€¢ 2013

Trinidad James, Don't Be S.A.F.E. Ā© Def JamThe lucrative career of Trinidad James was a short-lived affairā€¦No loss.Ā  Even so, he left an impression that unfortunately had influence on pop culture. ā€œAll Gold Everythingā€ from Donā€™t Be S.A.F.E. (2013), is dominated by one particular lyric: ā€œPopped a molly, Iā€™m sweatinā€™, woo!ā€ While the molly (ecstasy) was already ingrained engrained in hip-hop, itā€™s safe to say Trinidad James played a role in its expansion

18. Lady Antebellum, ā€œGoldenā€

Golden ā€¢ Capitol Nashville ā€¢ 2013

Lady Antebellum, Golden Ā© Capitol Nashvilleā€œYou are golden / Precious as a prayer flying up through the air / While the rain is falling / Golden, timeless as a kiss / Baby I don’t want to miss another perfect moment.ā€ Once upon a time, Lady Antebellum was one of country musicā€™s hottest acts. While Lady A is still a big deal, some of their popularity has waned since their Need You Now days.Ā  Nonetheless, Golden (2013) was a solid album, led by its title track.Ā  The ballad finds Charles Kelley exhibiting a lovely tone.Ā  Well-written and thoughtful overall, ā€œGoldenā€ is ā€œan ace in the hole.ā€ Does it match ā€œNeed You Now?ā€ No, but itā€™s a strong performance.

19. Mac Miller, ā€œDiamonds & Goldā€

Blue Slide Park ā€¢ Rostrum ā€¢ 2011

Mac Miller, Blue Slide Park Ā© RostrumBefore he ā€œfirst made a hundred grandā€ on ā€œ100 Grandkidsā€ or collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on ā€œGod is Fair, Sexy, Nasty,ā€ Mac Miller dropped his debut studio album Blue Slide Park. While songs like ā€œParty on 5th Aveā€ and ā€œFrick Part Marketā€ were more notable, the less heralded ā€œDiamonds & Goldā€ fits the occasion for obvious reasons.

ā€œDiamonds & Goldā€ is about a girl who isnā€™t looking for commitment whatsoever, but living wildly. Miller characterizes her as having lots of potential.Ā  While sheā€™s a gold digger (ā€œJust a fuckinā€™ tease, tryna get your cheese / Invite you out to dinner, cause she want to eat for freeā€), she doesnā€™t need to be (ā€œShe could pay if she wanted to, she wonā€™t thoughā€).

20. Jill Scott, ā€œGoldenā€

Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds, Vol. 2 ā€¢ Hidden Beach ā€¢ 2004

Jill Scott, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 Ā© Hidden BeachBack in 2004, Neo-soul singer Jill Scott was ā€œliving life like itā€™s golden, golden.ā€Ā  To this day, ā€œGoldenā€ ranks among Scottā€™s classics.Ā  Honestly, how many songs are as positive and uplifting as ā€œGolden?ā€Ā  Very few!

Stay tuned for a second installment of golden songs.Ā  Thereā€™s just too many for just one playlist!
