Bay Area rap standout G-Eazy enlists the beautiful, light vocals of Charlie Puth on his sixth single from ‘The Beautiful & Damned,’ “Sober.”

Ah, The Beautiful & Damned, the highly-anticipated third studio album by Bay Area rapper, G-Eazy. After releasing five singles, he drops a sixth and presumably final pre-release single, “Sober.” The rapper doesn’t fly solo though – he gets an assist from the continually rising Charlie Puth.

“Sober” commences abruptly with beautiful, smooth vocals courtesy of Charlie Puth.  Puth sings the hook, which is memorable.  His kinder, gentler sound contrasts the blunter, edgier rhymes of G-Eazy that follow. It should be noted, however, that Puth does exhibit a bit more grit than we’re normally accustomed to. Returning the focus to G-Eazy, as always, his flow is a selling point, not to mention his confidence. Is Gerald still cocky? Yes, but he doesn’t sound as cocky as he has on previous songs – call it a blessing of sorts.  Still, he’s profane, but even curbs that more than usual.

Final Thoughts 

After releasing multiple singles from The Beautiful & Damned, G-Eazy has given listeners a great hint at what to expect from the album.  “Sober” doesn’t trump banger “No Limit” by any means, but arguably, it’s one of the better songs released ahead of the album.  The production work is solid, and the song is fittingly set in a minor key, matching the sentiment of the lyrics and persona of Eazy.  Puth is an asset, and as always, Gerald is on autopilot.
