Franz Ferdinand, Always Ascending © DominoAlternative rock darlings Franz Ferdinand return with “Feel the Love Go,” the second single from their fifth studio album, ‘Always Ascending.’

The return of Franz Ferdinand is in full force with “Feel the Love Go,” the second single from Always Ascending (February 2, 2018).  A disco-infused, dance-rock groove makes “Feel the Love Go” infectious from the start. Frontman Alex Kapranos serves up relatively low-key vocals on the first verse. The energy level increases tremendously on the pre-chorus: “Why don’t you come over here?” Furthermore, the energy is turned-up on chorus.

“Think of a friend (love) / And wish them love / Think of an enemy (more) /And wish them more.”

The second verse scales things back once more, save for the consistent, danceable beat.

From there on, the pre-chorus returns, while the second iteration of the chorus adds one additional line. The bridge section offers contrasts with its blatant harmonic changes, while maintaining a groovy, danceable character.  Ultimately, it’s quite alluring and creative.

“Then feel the love return/ Feel the love infinity / Feel the love infinity / Then let it go / Let the love go / Oh, let the love go…”

“Feel the Love Go” welcomes a great saxophone solo during this section, expanding the colorful palette of sounds.  The radio edit fades out, while the extended version continues on with the instrumental. The extended version, which approaches the five-minute-mark, appears on Always Ascending as the ninth track.

Final Thoughts

Franz Ferdinand aren’t nearly as big as they once were – namely their self-titled “Take Me Out” and “Michael” days. Regardless of their commercial fortunes as of late, “Feel the Love Go” is a terrific dance-rock single.  While not as progressive as the title track, it’s clearly more accessible.
