“Damn, I can’t believe, I can’t believe.”  If this lyric is a reference to the fact that I’m subjecting myself to reviewing yet another Florida Georgia Line single, then it’s definitely on-point. With “Talk You Out of It,” the country duo opts for balladry as opposed to spelling (“Simple”) or being geographically-wasted (“Colorado”).  Here, the modus operandi is a night of fun with a hot girl who “had a long day” and “ain’t feelin’ them downtown lights.” What exactly do they want to talk her out of? Why her “Fine little dress.” “Don’t get me wrong, girl, I love it / Now I just want to talk you out of it.” Yeah, you can roll your eyes now.

All in all, “Talk You Out of It” is pleasant enough, arguably with a leg-up over the aforementioned singles released in 2018, if that’s saying much.  It’s true to country but has enough swagger to give it some crossover appeal.  Besides the suspect songwriting, arguably, the most objectionable moment of “Talk You Out of It” may also be viewed as its most distinct.  On the chorus, Florida Georgia Line makes reference to late, great R&B singer Luther Vandross, singing, “And now you’re lookin’ like a line from a Vandross song.” Why that objectionable? How the twang is poured on when pronouncing his last name, ugh!  It’s not the end of the world, but still, the twang felt totally forced and totally over-southernized.

Final Thoughts

As aforementioned, “Talk You Out of It” is pleasant enough, save for the horrible pronunciation of an R&B legend and empty lyrics such as the opening excerpt.  Again, the balladry definitely gets the edge over the totally over simplistic “Simple” and slightly edges out the drunken-high of “Colorado.” Still, Florida Georgia Line aren’t releasing the most meaningful songs of the year…
