It’s finally happening – Fergie is returning with her highly-anticipated sophomore album, Double Dutchess. Double Dutchess has been a long time in the making, arriving 11 years after the jam-packed The Dutchess.  Lots has changed since the days of “Fergalicious,” which might explain why the promo campaign for this project has been meh.  After three so-so singles, including the shameful “MILF$,” Fergie reignites the buzz with two singles: “You Already Know,” featuring Nicki Minaj, and “Hungry,” featuring Rick Ross.

An album opener needs to make a statement and be dramatic.  That’s exactly what “Hungry” does, potentially setting the tone for Double Dutchess.  The introduction is in no rush, lasting for nearly 50 seconds.  During this time, Rick Ross offers up some ad libs, as does Fergie.  Once things get properly initiated, Fergie drops hard-nosed rhymes.  What’s notable about this is that she showcases one of her best attributes: her personality.

Given the hard-nosed nature of the production, Rick Ross is right at home on his second verse.  Predictably, he’s got ‘money on his mind,’ referencing every rapper’s favorite foreign, the Rolls-Royce Wraith.  He does play off the same sensibilities as Fergie – being ambitious and of course “hungry.” There’s no doubt about the message, so in that respect, consider it a pro.

Final Thoughts

All in all, like “You Already Know,” the potential is undeniable.  Fergie has excellent production work, a great flow, and an unapologetic persona.  Furthermore, she has a ubiquitous collaborator by her side in Rick Ross.  The problem is, “Hungry” just doesn’t have quite enough meat to feed the hunger of the listeners.  It’s close, but personally, there’s still the sense that she’s searching for answers after an extended hiatus.
