Ah, it’s time to get cozy and cover up! In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS focuses solely on the musician who covers.  It is open to established musicians and musicians who may not be as well-known. In the fifth edition of COVERS (2025), ETHAN delivers a compelling rendition of “SPORTS CAR” originally performed by Tate McRae.

“I’m goin’ weak in my knees / Where’d you put those keys?” Oh, snap! “I’m such a big T8 [Tate McRae] stan it’s not funny.” Oh, we know, ETHAN (Ethan Choryin Luo). A couple of years ago, the talented pop/R&B singer covered McRae’s “she’s all I wanna be” as “he’s all I wanna be” with a gay spin 🌈. In time for Valentine’s Day 2025, Choryin Luo covers another McRae banger, “SPORTS CAR”. Had McRae not ‘ate’ as much as she did on the original, you could mistake this hot cover by ETHAN as his song.

Simply put, ETHAN ‘does the damn thing’ on “SPORTS CAR.” Can you say, vroom, vroom 🏎️!!!  The hunky singer ‘eats!’ Notably, the key is lowered slightly compared to the original. He sounds natural over the sleek modern pop production (Ryan Tedder and Grant), particularly those mammoth drums.  He matches the sexy vibes that McRae brings to the original. I adore his falsetto during the pre-chorus – smooth like butter! His most playful vocals occur during the centerpiece, the chorus.  Here, he talk-sings, selling the innuendo like a champ!

“I think you know what this is

I think you wanna uh

No, you ain’t got no Mrs. (Uh)

Oh, but you got a sports car

We can uh-uh in it

While you drive it real far

Yeah, you know what this is

Yeah, you know what this is.”

Ooh-wee! Like Tate’s original, in the second chorus, we get the combination of talk-singing, as well as Choryin Luo’s sweet, pitched pipes. The bridge is energetic… and titillating 😈. This self-described T8 stan clearly understood the assignment on this utterly fabulous cover. Speaking of covers, did you see the “SPORTS CAR” cover art? That body is banging 😍 😍 😍! Again, vroom, vroom 🏎️!!!
