EDEN (Johnathon Ng) impressed tremendously on “start//end,” a promo single from his first full-length project, vertigo.  Although it was lengthy, it was stupendous without a doubt – a stark contrast from what we normally hear on radio. “Gold” gives the alternative-electro musician another gem.

Following a somewhat random intro (“Don’t know how well this is gonna be / But, the basic idea is-”), EDEN begins singing a guitar-driven, singer-songwriter-styled love song. His vocals are honest and passionate, while his lyrics are poetic.  “Yeah, been chasing Kairos with those scapegoat eyes.” Even with his knack with the pen, it doesn’t prohibit him from dropping ‘the bomb’ as he continues to express his emotions.

F*ck the summertime, it’s you / So scared of overgrowing youth / When it’s not done with you.”

On the chorus, he keeps things simple, but ultimately memorable and tuneful.  After its first iteration, electronic production cues begin to appear.  You knew they were imminent.  From there, we get another verse, this time sans any salty language, followed by interlude, chorus, and an outro. On the outro, EDEN asserts, “no more, call it what you want / Call it what you want but I call it growing up and I’m done.” Word.

Final Thoughts

As aforementioned, EDEN delivers the goods on “gold.” No, it’s not quite as ripe as “start//end” was, but Johnathon Ng has definitely set himself up for success.  This 22-year old who “call(s) it growing up” has something special for sure.
