The moment has finally arrived.  After releasing his Liar EP in May 2016, Declan McKenna drops his debut album, What Do You Think About the Car? McKenna, who’s only 18, is a truly gifted, up-and-coming singer/songwriter.  One of the four songs that appeared on Liar, “Bethlehem,” is reprised on What Do You Think About the Car? (Track #8).

“So, you’ve left it all behind / For a love is only as you see it / Though, so many do confide in you / It seems you are the one that confides most / But you sin as you wish…”

Religion takes on a larger role on “Bethlehem,” evidenced by the title and the lyrical references. DIY Magazine characterizes the McKenna take on religion perfect: Declan McKenna Damns Religion on ‘Bethlehem’ Single. Indeed, his views of religion are unfavorable aren’t favorable.  In an interview with Teen Vogue, he seems a bit more ‘50/50’ on religion:

“…Having been raised like a Catholic, I have a sort of sympathy for religion, in that I think that religion’s religion. It can be bad or good.”

In the context of the song, in the interview, he states he desired to express “just the negative stuff.”

Some of that negative stuff are those that are “holier than thou,” yet sinful in their own right. On the chorus, he sings:

“Because I’m in Bethlehem / I got a seat in heaven/ And though I’m heaven sent / I can do as I want and you don’t have the right to choose.”

Final Thoughts

“Bethlehem” is another example of the genius of Declan McKenna.  His messaging is pitch perfect here, even if it will upset some.  It shouldn’t, particularly given his explanation.  Who doesn’t know someone who is “holier than thou,” yet, is the “chief amongst sinners?”
