Daya, New ยฉ InterscopeGrammy-winning, teen-pop artist Daya returns with a new single, โ€œNew,โ€ which has its fair share of fun and catchy moments.

Hereโ€™s one โ€œhard pill to swallow.โ€ Teen pop artist Daya is already a Grammy-winner! Yes, she won a Grammy alongside The Chainsmokers for their hit, โ€œDonโ€™t Let Me Down,โ€ which was released in 2016. Thatโ€™s admirable by all means, yet itโ€™s also a bit annoying.ย  Why annoying? There have been much more experienced, more talented musicians who have fallen short of Grammy glory.ย  Also, Daya has a strike โ€“ arguably two strikes โ€“ against her.ย  She earned a coveted spot on the Year-End Playlist: 20 Worst Songs of 2016 for โ€œSit Still, Look Pretty.โ€ Yuck, the song is cringy!ย  But moving on, sheโ€™s returned with a new single, โ€œNew,โ€ which has its moments.

Despite being set in major key, โ€œNewโ€ sounds a bit restrained initially.ย  The production begins in subdued fashion. Eventually, things percolate to a serious boil. ย Daya shows respectable vocal poise on the verses. On the pre-chorus, she adopts a ripe falsetto, which is sweet during this particular section. By the chorus, following cooler, more controlled vocals, she โ€˜belts it out.โ€™ ย Expectedly, the chorus is catchy. Daya repeats the lyrics enough that they easily get stuck in the head.

โ€œIโ€™m missing you / Iโ€™m missing you / What the hell did I do โ€“ did I do / Messing with someone new / Thinking I wanted to / Turns out donโ€™t want new / I want you.โ€

By the chorus, we understand the identity of the song โ€“ electro-pop. Thereโ€™s a drop, and of course, the repetition.

Final Thoughts

The big con of โ€œNewโ€ is that after a while, this joint grows a bit annoying.ย  It suffers from too much repetition.ย  Still, all in all, Daya offers the world a single thatโ€™s enjoyable enough, but not groundbreaking.
