“B
ottle after bottle, now she tipsy / Can’t trust these hoes ‘cause they iffy.” Clearly, 🏆 Grammy-winning R&B artist 🎙 Chris Brown is serving up ‘high-quality content.’ Okay, I’m being sarcastic as Brown has been trending shallow for years. His latest banger, 🎵 “Iffy”, is no different. Furthermore, Brown doesn’t really change up or expand his style. Does he need to? Well, as the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Fans of the singer who’ve been ride or die will continue to do so, while the rest of us wouldn’t mind a bit more variation. There are pros regarding “Iffy,” of course. As to be expected, we get banging production by 🎛 OG Parker, 🎛 Smash David, and 🎛 Blaq Tuxedo. It’s rare that a C Breezy joint isn’t sleek AF. Worth noting, there’s lots of songwriters on this record, which isn’t particularly deep (“I’m ‘bout to pull up in that motherfuckin’ Bentley truck / Got some bad bitches and they ‘bout to fuck it up”). To Brown’s credit, sampling the 🎙 50 Cent aughts classic, 🎵 “In Da Club” accounts for a few of those credits. The thing is, even as Brown exudes ample personality, confidence, and a heaping dose of swagger, the substance and ‘transcendence’ factor is “iffy” (see what I did there). Still, this profane joint has an interesting melody, rhythmic and agile like melodic rap, and the pre-chorus and chorus are catchy. Furthermore, give him credit for the contrast during the bridge section – a welcome change of pace.
