3 out of 5 stars

Charlie Puth, Attention (Remix) © Artist Partner GroupKYLE joins Charlie Puth on a remix of his hit single, “Attention.” “Attention (Remix)” is enjoyable, but doesn’t supplant the original.

Have I been a bit harsh on Charlie Puth? Perhaps.  His debut Nine Track Mind left more to be desired, but arguably, Puth might say the same thing himself. Single “Attention” is certainly a step in the right direction for the sensitive, perfect-pitched 25-year old.  Maybe three stars was disrespectful (feels more like three-and-a-half), but nonetheless, C.P. is on the come-up.  On “Attention (Remix),” he enlists hot, up-and-coming rapper KYLE.  Given the fact I’ve already spoken about the original, we’ll focus on the additions and changes on the remix.

KYLE adds an intro, which is pop-rapped.  This is expected, given the fact that he’s established himself as a pop-rapper.

“She said we’d be better of friends / Now that would make no sense.”

Beyond the intro, “Attention” continues on like the original. Charlie Puth remains the star, showcasing his distinct tone on the first verse, pre-chorus, chorus, second verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and bridge.  Finally, after taking all the limelight, KYLE returns, adding the third verse.  Ultimately, it’s a short verse, but he exhibits a nice flow.

“Psh / Yeah, well I guess, uh / You ain’t been functioning at your best, uh / Searchin’ for attention in my mentions / Like talking shit’s the only way to get some, nope…”

Following his final contribution, a chorus and outro follow from Charlie Puth.

Final Thoughts

So, how does the remixed version of “Attention” stack up? The original is better, but it doesn’t hurt adding KYLE by any means.  He’s the right type of rapper by all means.  In reiteration, the original deserved slightly more credit than I gave.  It’s groovy AF. My apologies Charlie for ever selling you short…on “Attention” that is, not Nine Track Mind.
