Camila Cabello,Havana © SonyCamila Cabello continues to grow as a solo artist on single, “Havana,” assisted by the always interesting Young Thug.

There’s been ample buzz surrounding Camila Cabello, particularly following her exit from Fifth Harmony.  Bloggers and music journalists went crazy, ready to coronate Cabello even before one solo single arrived.  The inevitable solo single happened with “Crying in the Club,” but the outcome wasn’t quite as triumphant as expected.  Personally, “Crying in the Club” was average at best.  It wasn’t a misstep, but it also didn’t showcase superstar potential.  Cabello returns with two new singles, “OMG” featuring Quavo and “Havana” featuring Young Thug.

There are a number of pros about “Havana.” The first is simply that it differentiates itself from the pop singer’s previous two singles.  This doesn’t sound like “Crying in the Club” or “OMG.”

Being named “Havana,” naturally, there’s some Latin influence.  It’s not overpowering, but it allows the record to separate itself from a number of contemporary pop singles.

Topping “Despacito” in the Latin-pop vein may not happen for some time, but the sound is currently in.  Also, expectedly, Cabello has a great voice for pop music.  No quibbles there. Another pro is the chorus, which is infectious.  Like “OMG,” she owns what’s expected to be the most memorable part of any song.  From the first listen, it wins you over.

Cons? Young Thug isn’t for everybody.  It makes perfect sense to have a rapper on here, but, was Young Thug the optimal choice? Nonetheless, his idiosyncratic approach is in full force – for better or for worse.  It’s a personal preference.  As far as the song itself, it’s enjoyable and fun by all means.  Is it revolutionary or transcendent? No.

Final Thoughts

Like “OMG,” Camila Cabello seems to be stepping up her game.  She’s on the right track to achieve her goals as a solo artist.  The work is not done, but “Havana” is a welcome addition, odd Young Thug collaboration or not.
