“When I said I hope you’re happy, didn’t mean it / Never thought you’d be so good at moving on…” Uh-oh… sounds like heartbreak for Grammy-nominated pop sensation Camila Cabello on her single, “Cry for Me.” “Cry for Me” follows a number of singles released by Camila Cabello in 2019: “Señorita” with boyfriend (and pop heartthrob) Shawn Mendes, “Shameless”, and “Liar”. Cabello co-wrote “Cry for Me” with Adam Feeney, Louis Bell (co-producer), and Ryan Tedder. Bell, whose profile continues to expand, co-produced “Cry for Me” with Frank Dukes.

As the aforementioned pre-chorus suggested, Camila Cabello’s ex seems to have rebounded from their break-up. This is confirmed on the verses. On the first verse, she points out, “Yeah, you look so happy walking down the street, don’t you baby,” continuing, “Did you forget, you said that in this lifetime you can never get over me?”  On the second, she’s jealous of his new girlfriend, and how he treats her.  Her best line –“Yeah, she should be thanking me / Oh, who’s gonna touch you like me?” Interestingly, despite her feelings, “Cry for Me” is quite groovy, keeping the tempo quicker than expected for a song where the lover feels scorned.  Even with this fast pace, Cabello has a bit more bite vocally than usually, letting her emotions shine freely.  It all comes to a head on the chorus, where Camila states her desires:

“I want you to cry for me, cry for me
Say you’d d-d-die for me, die for me
And if you can’t then maybe, lie for me, lie for me
‘Cause you haunt me when I’m dreamin’…”

For good measure, on the bridge, quite the expressive moment, Cabello is crying, still trying to understand once more how he can be ‘okay.’

Final Thoughts

All indications suggest that Camila Cabello’s sophomore album will be quite intriguing. “Cry for Me” is another entertaining offering from the pop star, with its fair share of pros.  Will this single change your life? Nah, but it’s enjoyable and finds Cabello bring a bit more edge to her music.
