SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. To reiterate what I said last week (AC/DC Takes ‘Power Up’ to No. 1), this column won’t be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that 💩 moving. This week, I picked out SIX notable observations 🔎 from the Billboard 200 📉, and FOUR observations 🔎 from the Billboard Hot 100 📉, with 🎙 BTS topping both the album (💿 BE) and song charts (🎵 “Life Goes On”) respectively.
Billboard 200 📉
💭 Despite her own dominant year, 🎙 Megan Thee Stallion settled for the runner up spot with 💿 Good News. That said, with her no. 2 bow (105,500), she earns her best start on the Billboard 200 yet, following her mixtapes and her 2020 EP, 💿 Suga.
💭 After 💿 Power Up debuted at no. 1 last week, 🎙 AC/DC descends down the chart to no. 12
💭 BTS and Megan Thee Stallion earned the sole top-10 debuts on the Billboard 200. There were, however, two big names in the top-20. 🎙 Josh Groban debuts at no. 17 with 💿 Harmony, while 🎙 Jeezy launches at no. 19 with 💿 The Recession 2. Both musicians have had better days, of course, earning no. 1 albums back in the day.
💭 A couple of top-40 debuts go down as well. 🎙 SAINt JHN launches at no. 34 with 💿 While the World Was Burning, while 🎙 DaBaby starts at no. 40 with the EP dedicated to his late brother, 💿 My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G).
💭 You know, the no. 1 to no. 12 tumble for AC/DC (Power Up) doesn’t look so bad when you peruse the second week descent for a number of albums. 🎙 YoungBoy Never Broke Again sees 💿 Until I Return nosedive from no. 10 to no. 41 (down 30 spots). 🎙 2 Chainz sees 💿 So Help Me God! free fall from no. 15 to no. 77 (down 62 spots). 🎙 Andrea Bocelli takes the worst tumble of the three as 💿 Believe slides from no. 26 to no. 100 (down 74 spots).
Billboard Hot 100 📉
💭 On both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100, 🎙 BTS is dominant. According to Billboard, 🎵 “Life Goes On” is the first no. 1 single to top the Hot 100 sung predominately in Korean. Also, worth noting, Former no. 1 hit 🎵 “Dynamite” remains ‘kind of a big deal’ as well, ascending from no. 14 to no. 3 14 weeks in.
💭 The ‘mood’ has changed slightly for 🎙 24kGoldn or 🎙 Iann Dior. 🎵 “Mood” slips from no. 1 to no. 2 in its 16th week on the Hot 100.
💭 🎙 Shawn Mendes and 🎙 Justin Bieber come through with 🎵 “Monster” which debuts at no. 8.
💭 Unsurprisingly, the top new song from 🎙 Megan Thee Stallion’s debut album, 💿 Good News, was none other than the infectious (if ridiculous, ultra-sexed up) 🎵 “Body,” which launches at no. 12.
