4 out of 5 stars

Bruno Mars continues to be one of the biggest stars in the music industry, regardless of genre.  His third studio album 24K Magic, is nominated for the Grammy’s most prestigious award of them all – album of the year.  One of the gems from 24K Magic is penultimate record, “Finesse.” Post-album, “Finesse” gets released as a single in remix form (“Finesse (Remix)”), bringing the continually rising Cardi B in for the assist. Cool.

“Finesse (Remix)” retains the allure and charm of the original.  It dabbles in the now defunct New Jack Swing movement, seriously making a case the movement’s resurgence.  As he says himself, he does indeed “shut the shit down on sight /…Drippin’ in finesse.” The point of all the smooth talking? Mars and his lady make a formidable pair.  In this case, his lady is Cardi B, who drops the first verse of the remix.  Safe to say, she shows off her big personality, flexing, and bragging, “My big, fat ass got all them boys hooked.” Later, she assists on the bridge and outro, though her biggest contribution is her tone-setting, opening verse.

Final Thoughts

We were already aware of the excellence of “Finesse.”  Adding Cardi B just ups the ante.  Was she necessary? No, of course not, but, given this is a late 24K Magic single, it makes perfect sense to add one of the hottest, up-and-coming artists to the single.
