BØRNS, Blue Madonna © InterscopeAlternative musician BØRNS nails it on “I Don’t Want U Back,” the third promo single from his sophomore album, ‘Blue Madonna.’

“I should’ve known better when you’re coming to bed at four in the morning / I should’ve taken your eyes avoiding me as a warning.” Uh-oh – relationship issues! Perfect ‘fuel for the fire’ for a song to say the least! Michigan bred, Cali-based alternative musician BØRNS returns after more than a two-year hiatus with his sophomore album, Blue Madonna (January 12, 2018).  With four singles available in advance, the single at hand, “I Don’t Want U Back” served as the third teaser track.

First and foremost, the biggest selling point of “I Don’t Want You Back” is the V-O-I-C-E.  BØRNS has a distinct, beautiful instrument at his disposal, no questions asked.  On this lovely record, he exhibits masterful falsetto and a radiant tone.  That can’t be overstated – he sounds beastly, high-pitched vocals and all. Beyond the crowning achievement, there’s more goodness.  The production shimmers in all its electronic, synth-tastic glory. The songwriting is both memorable and thoughtful, particularly the chorus.

“I sleep better than every night you were lying next to me / Don’t wanna see your face, you need to face the facts / I don’t want you back / I don’t want you back.”

His authenticity and passion are formidable.

Final Thoughts

“I Don’t Want U Back” is terrific.  From a first listen, it sticks, impressing with vocals, production, and songwriting.  Adding to the goodness is its underpinnings – the harmonic progression.  With miscues eschewed, “I Don’t Want U Back” is nothing short of glorious.
