Black Atlass, My Life © XO / RepublicRising Canadian musician Black Atlass (Alex Fleming) showcases incredible potential on lush, silky smooth single, “My Life.”

If you haven’t checked out Black Atlass yet, get on that – NOW! The Canadian musician (Alex Fleming) is signed to The Weekend’s XO label, which is distributed by Republic.  Notably, he appears on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack on “Sacrifice,” alongside Jessie Reyez.  But, he gives a gem on the single at hand, “My Life.”

“My Life” features smooth electric piano.  This is the perfect canvas for Black Atlass’ opening ad-libs. The record is overall well produced, fitting the electro, smoky, urban contemporary/pop sound. Fleming embodies the distinct, Canadian R&B sound. His tone is ‘smooth as butter’ on the first verse.  He treats us with falsetto at the end of the verse (“And I love you, and I love you, I do, oh”).  The pre-chorus is simple, but quite effective and enjoyable.

“What if I can never be there? / What if I would always hide? / What if you were temporary? / Looking through my mind.”

Similarly, the chorus is simple, yet highly effective as well.

“This is my life / This is my life / This is my life / To the day I die.”

Maintaining a concrete form, the chorus is followed by a repetitive, silky-smooth post-chorus. Shocking right?

“Living on the edge of a dream / Living on the other side of the screen… / Baby till the day I…”

Final Thoughts

Upon analyzing “My Life,” there’s ultimately little to be skeptical about.  Black Atlass has tons of potential.  It will be exciting to see what he serves up next.  That said, perhaps “My Life” is a smidge too indulgent, too lush, and perhaps it feels a bit slower than it really is.  That’s nitpicking.
