Theme & Lyrics ✍
“Ain’t No Sunshine” doesn’t need extensive analysis. Thematically, it’s self-explanatory. Bill Withers is devastated “when she’s gone.” The heartbreak and heartache do a serious number on him. He asks himself, “Wonder this time where she’s gone / Wonder if she’s gonna stay /… This house just ain’t no home / Anytime she goes away.” Perhaps even more famous than the verses of this lush, minor key soul gem is the bridge, specifically the phrase, “I know.” Withers famously sings it 26 times. It has it’s intended effect, particularly when he finishes the thought: “Hey, I oughta leave the young thing alone / but ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone.”
