AWOLNATION, Here Come the Runts © Red BullAaron Bruno and AWOLNATION drop a gem with “Seven Sticks of Dynamite,” the second single from their forthcoming third album, ‘Here Come the Runts.’

Kids, AWOLNATION is back.  Yes, that would be the “Sail” dudes.  The Aaron Bruno fronted collective returns with album number three, Here Come the Runts (February 2, 2018).  Previously, AWOLNATION gave us “Passion.” Now, they return with a second advance single, “Seven Sticks of Dynamites.” Simply put, “Dynamite” > “Passion.”

“Seven Sticks of Dynamites” commences with relatively simple guitar accompaniment.  Once Aaron Bruno begins singing, he shocks by dropping a bomb on us – falsetto.  This approach keeps the record intriguing from the jump, providing a different look – rather sound.  On the chorus, he blends his chest voice alongside the falsetto with intriguing results.  There is naturally a bit more production during this section.  Also, it’s worth noting how memorable and utterly catchy the chorus is. It’s simple mind you, but both sufficient and ultimately successful.

“Lipstick like dynamite, seven sticks of dynamite / Lipstick like dynamite /…ooh…”

The falsetto returns in all its glory on the second verse, followed by the second iteration of the chorus. At this point, the song gets more punch, signaled by Bruno grittily singing, “COME ON!” Albeit delayed, the rock finally comes into full fruition.  Chilling choral backing vocals, Drum runs, electric guitar, and more aggressive vocals replacing the sweeter falsetto.

Final Thoughts

Aaron Bruno and AWOLNATION have a gem on their hands with “Seven Sticks of Dynamite.” It’s an enjoyable record that is well-paced, well-performed, and all in all well-rounded.  In regards to its exquisite pacing, it’s a smart choice for AWOLNATION to keep things poised and restrained until near the end of the song.   Arguably, the build-up isn’t as ‘big’ as it could’ve been, but it feels right for this song. Good stuff.
