Ashanti, Say Less © Written EntertainmentAshanti returns with attitude on her latest single “Say Less.” She enlists the ever-popular  Ty Dolla $ign and DJ Mustard on the boards.

Ashanti has had a career with its share of ups and downs.  During the most lucrative part of her career, the beginning, the comparisons to Mary J. Blige were overkill.  Overstatements to the nth degree.  While Ashanti has always had a sweet voice, she’s never been a particularly flashy singer who relied on gospel histrionics.  But this isn’t about knocking “The Princess,” it’s about her reintroduction on “Say Less,” featuring the ever-ubiquitous Ty Dolla $ign.

From the start, “Say Less” sounds modern and familiar.  Why? The familiarity comes from producer DJ Mustard who’s responsible for a string of hits.  His style is easily recognizable, and honestly, it ends up being a good match for Ashanti.  Vocally, she’s predictable –subtler as opposed to incredibly forceful or overt.  Even though she’s not an explosive singer, she offers up some undeniable toughness, thanks to her potty-mouthedness.  The attitude is a pro, giving her more personality. As for Ty Dolla $ign, he plays his traditional role, singing with his distinct, coarse pipes and adding some modern flair and punch to the single.  He plays off of Ashanti, as well as delivers his own fair share of moments.

Final Thoughts

So, how does “Say Less” play out? It’s okay – it has its share of moments.  Ashanti gets points for her attitude and toughness, even if vocally, she continues to leave more to be desired. Fans won’t be disappointed.  Can “Say Less” be a hit? Meh.
