Anthony Starble is a singer/songwriter from Evergreen, Colorado, based in Los Angeles, California. For Starble, music could be likened to his ‘saving grace’ from a young age. It served as his escape from being the bullied outsider. How shameful and totally uncool is that? Give him credit for overcoming the adversity and focusing on something he’s totally excellent at. His magnificent musicianship and artistic prowess – piano, singing, composition, and theatre arts – has definitely opened doors for this supremely talented CalArts music graduate. Beyond his skills as a solo artist, he’s also involved in electro-pop duo Starhook and the hip, indie choir, The Silver Lake Chorus. Starble shines on his single at hand, the radiant, thoughtful ballad, “Paperweight.”
Beyond the focal point of “Paperweight,” there are other attributes. The production work is lovely, led by his beloved piano, yet also incorporating strings. Naturally, voice and the backdrop help to shape the mesmerizing quality about this ballad, which captivates from the start. Also notable is the pacing on this ballad. The first verse is more restrained, while there’s more presence overall on the second. Higher heights are reached on the second chorus, while the bridge ‘brings it down,’ building with a gradual crescendo. It’s deceptive however, as the chorus that follows is softer. All that is to say that Starble brilliantly teases the listener, taking them on quite an emotional, incredibly stimulating ride.
