SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. To reiterate what I said last week (Machine Gun Kelly & Travis Scott Top), this column won’t be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that 💩 moving. This week, I picked out SIX notable observations from the Billboard 200, and FOUR observations from the Billboard Hot 100, with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin debuting at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Savage Mode II.
Billboard 200
💭 BLACKPINK doesn’t do too shabby on the Billboard 200 themselves as The Album launches at no. 2 with six-figure units as well (110,000 per Caulfield).
💭 YG also secures a spot in the top five with his latest album, My Life 4Hunnid, debuting at no. 4.
💭 Keeping the top five fresh, Bryson Tiller starts at no. 5 with his third studio album, Anniversary.
💭 LANY also gets ‘a piece of the pie’ that is the top 10 as Mama’s Boy launches at no. 7.
💭 With so many new albums in the top 10, we’ll reserve the sixth and final takeaway for non-top-10 debuts. Dolly Parton and Bon Jovi brighten up the top 20 with A Holly Dolly Christmas (no. 16) and 2020 (no. 19) respectively. Mariah Carey sees The Rarities launch at no. 31 – she deserves better! Corey Taylor unleashes CMFT at no. 44 – the final top-50 debut.
Billboard Hot 100
💭 Shawn Mendes debuts at no. 18 with “Wonder”, the promo single from his highly anticipated fourth studio album, Wonder (December 4, 2020).
💭 Travis Scott, Young Thug, M.I.A. experience as setback this week. “Franchise” takes a sizable tumble from no. 1 to no. 25.
💭 The ever-popular Megan Thee Stallion charts another new song on the Hot 100. Assisted by Young Thug, “Don’t Stop” launches at no. 30.
