Track Review: Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne, ‘Changed It’
The ever-versatile Nicki Minaj remains confident on flex-fest, “Change It.” She gets an assist from her Young Money colleague, Lil Wayne.
It’s clear that Nicki Minaj is setting herself up for a big year in 2017. Lately, she’s been everywhere, from dropping new singles as a lead artist to guesting on others’ tracks. Furthermore, she’s part of a heated feud with Remy Ma, with “No Frauds” being a product of the beef. “Changed It” just adds fuel to the fire, pairing Nicki with Lil Wayne, another artist preparing for a gargantuan comeback.
Lil Wayne kicks off “Changed It,” relying on autotune. The result is a faded-sounding intro, which eventually segues to a predominately sung hook. After Wayne sets the tone, Nicki Minaj takes over the reins, exhibiting no shortage of confidence.
“The big three on the court, b*tch at them bleachers / I don’t wanna have to break bad like it screeches / A b*tch out in Atlantic eating them peaches / A b*tch got more bars than where Big Meech is.”
Essentially, she’s flexing hard, period. She’s been influential in rap music herself, as has Young Money as a whole. She wishes to confirm her status on “Changed It.” Her best moment comes during the pre-hook.
“Quiet dawg, my phone changed up / I’m icin’ out my Barbie chains up / And when I come, get your changed cup / These bum b*tches never change up.”
Lil Wayne isn’t the least bit shy on his verse, opening with fire:
“No more CMB shit, I changed it / Young Money shit, Mula Gang shit.”
A flex-fest for Weezy as well, reliably, he can’t resist a filthy sex reference.
“Lil Tune like autotune, I get in her throat and she harmonize / She get the D and ooh, la, la, a, and when she leave, I Kumbaya.”
Ultimately, “Changed It” gives Nicki Minaj another banger. This isn’t a transcendent, deep record, but she clearly gets her point across. The same could be said about Lil Wayne, who has delivered much more rousing, memorable performance than this one. Nonetheless, there’s something here.
