Track Review: Ed Sheeran, ‘How Would You Feel (Paean)’
British singer-songwriter extraordinaire Ed Sheeran continues his unstoppable flex-fest on “How Would You Feel (Paean),” the third single ÷.
Ed Sheeran returns with his third single from his highly anticipated third studio album, ÷, entitled “How Would You Feel (Paean).” From a first listen, it is clear that “How Would You Feel (Paean)” is a departure from both “The Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.” That’s a pro – it showcases his versatility. In regards to the songwriting prowess, this record is more closely related to “Castle on the Hill” in regards to depth. The difference between the two is tempo, and subject matter. “How Would You Feel” establishes itself as a romantic ballad from the jump. It is a killer one at that.
How does Ed Sheeran do with ballads? He absolutely, positively slays them. “Thinking Out Loud” was arguably the crowning achievement of X, earning the singer/songwriter his first Grammy victories. “How Would You Feel” has the same potential. It’s not nearly as memorable, yet, but it’s superbly written. He masterfully shares his dedication to his bae. Authenticity tends to play in Sheeran’s favor – he seems like the guy everybody wants to hang out with and befriend. This gives him a vulnerability that makes him relatable.
Ultimately, “How Would You Feel (Paean)” gives fans another reason to anticipate the greatness that ÷ should be. This is an honest, radiant piece of music. Sheeran has a stellar voice and has established a clear identity as an artist. He is a crossover success, appealing to lovers of multiple styles. That base should be firmly onboard with his latest, greatest offering.
