“In My Dreams” opens with piano. This isn’t surprising considering that piano accompaniment fueled breakout hit “Lost Boy.” Ruth Be delivers calm, cool, and collected vocals. She floats atop the accompaniment. It is hard to deny the beauty of Ruth B’s instrument, even considering her subtle approach.
Hints of strings enter the second half of the verse, not to mention additional vocals. There is no percussion; this production relies on piano, strings, and layers of vocals and backing vocals. The chorus is Thoughtfully penned and performed:
“But if I see you in my dreams tonight / then maybe you were right / and I’ll call you in the morning / If I see you in my dreams tonight / and you take my hands and tell me / ‘I’ve been waiting for you’ / then I’ll tell you, ‘me too’ / If I see you in my dreams.”
The bridge represents one of the highlights:
“Maybe we’ll meet in a different dimension / and you can tell me all the things you didn’t mention… / ‘you’ll say what is this?’ / I’ll say, ‘I guess love at first sight exists’.”
The final iteration of the chorus is the most powerful.
Ultimately, “In My Dreams” gives Ruth B another song and performance she should be proud of. Even though she is something of a subtle vocalist, her voice is nothing short of radiant. The songwriting is relatable and beautifully penned. While “In My Dreams” may not wow as you begin listening, it’s hypnotic and has you onboard by the end.
