Track Review: DJ Khaled ft. Drake, ‘For Free’
On infectious single “For Free,” DJ Khaled – with a mighty assist from Drake – have their minds on one thing only – awesome sex.
The premise of DJ Khaled’s new song “For Free” (featuring Drake) is pretty simple. “For Free” is all about awesome sex. Finding something more meaningful within “For Free” simply isn’t possible. This is a summer anthem that’s meant to be “dessert” as opposed to being nutritionally sound. Booty is the modus operandi; there’s no doubt about it, particularly with the occasional stripper reference…
So, how good is “For Free?” It’s incredibly catchy, with Drake on autopilot with his lustfully assembled rhymes. The hook is the song’s best attribute, with Drake spitting,
“I always wonder if you ask yourself / is it just me? / is it just me? / or is this sex so good I shouldn’t have to f*ck for free?”
Obviously, the “free” part adds a whole new level of ‘scandalous.’
Besides the hook, there are plenty of other clever references. The best is Drake’s reference to Kendrick Lamar’s “For Free? (Interlude)” from To Pimp A Butterfly. Throughout the original, Lamar, spitting over a jazz backdrop, constantly reiterates the lyric, “this d*ck ain’t free.” Drake’s reference to the line makes it even cooler:
“And like your boy from Compton said / you know this dick ain’t free!”
Where does Drake go from there?
“I got girls that I shoulda made pay for it / got girls that I shoulda made wait for it.”
So, with Drake’s pivotal/primary role in “For Free” shored up, what exactly is DJ Khaled’s role? The intro and the outro of course. Does he rock it out? Yes. Is his role really important? Well… Regardless, “For Free” is a banger. Drake and Khaled do good work together and this instance is no different.
