1. Queen, “We Will Rock You”
💿 News of the World • 🏷 Hollywood • 📅 1977

“Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise / Playing in the street / Gonna be a big man someday.” Ah, please continue 🎙 Freddie Mercury! “You got mud on your face / You big disgrace / Kicking your can / All over the place, singing…” I think EVERYBODY and his brother (or sister) can sing the following line: “We will, we will rock you!” 🎵 “We Will Rock You” (💿 News of the World, 1977) is one of the best 🎙 Queen songs of all time. Furthermore, it’s one of the greatest songs, regardless of band or musical style of all time!

There are so many reasons why “We Will Rock You” is the sugar honey iced tea. One big reason is Freddie effing Mercury, who is nothing short of awesome. Mercury’s voice was a once-in-a-lifetime voice, period. Did the man ever miss a note? I certainly don’t believe so, particularly with his wide range. The lyrics, particularly the sing along chorus, is another reason why “We Will Rock You” is epic. The verses are also energetic and memorable. All that said, the thing that really makes “We Will Rock You” so timeless is the body percussion, woo! Children and adults everywhere love the simple yet innovative groove that is instantly recognizable. Also, give some love to 🎙 Brian May and that awesome guitar solo (and writing the song, too).

2. Carrie Underwood, “Jesus, Take the Wheel”
💿 Some Hearts • 🏷 19 / Sony • 📅 2005

“Jesus take the wheel / Take it from my hands / ‘Cause I cannot do this on my own.” Say that, 🎙 Carrie Underwood, SAY THAT! “I’m letting go / So give me one more chance / Save me from this road I am on / Jesus take the wheel.” Hallelujah! Need an awesome, slightly nontraditional sermonic selection? How about the authentic, beloved Underwood gem, 🎵 “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (💿 Some Hearts, 2005)? This 🏆 Grammy-winning, top-20 Billboard Hot 100 hit was penned by 🎼✍ Brett James, 🎼✍ Gordon Sampson, and 🎼✍ Hillary Lindsey, and produced by 🎛 Mark Wright.

In “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” Underwood tells the story of a woman who sees her life flashing before her eyes while driving home for Christmas. Knowing that she’s losing control, she prays that “Jesus take the wheel.”
“She was goin’ way too fast
Before she knew it
She was spinnin’ on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn’t even have time to cry
She was so scared
She threw her hands up in the air.”
Ultimately, the bigger picture of Underwood’s ‘Wheel’ classic is letting Go and letting God.

3. Dua Lipa, “Boys Will Be Boys”
💿 Future Nostalgia • 🏷 Warner • 🗓 2020

“When will we stop saying things? / ‘Cause they’re all listening / No, the kids ain’t alright / Oh, and they do what they see / ‘Cause it’s all on TV / Oh, the kids ain’t alright.” Sigh, 🎙 Dua Lipa knocked it out of the park with her sophomore album, 💿 Future Nostalgia. The 🏆 Grammy-winning pop artist concludes the standard version of the LP with 🎵 “Boys Will Be Boys.” “Boys Will Be Boys,” is pretty straightforward in its messaging, and focuses on female empowerment (“And that was sarcasm, in case you need it mansplained”).

The chorus, the centerpiece, sums things up perfectly:
“Boys will be, boys will be
Boys will be, boys will be boys
But girls will be women.”
While Future Nostalgia lacks a slow jam, the brief balladry of “Boys Will Be Boys” is the closest the album comes. Dua shows off the versatility of her instrument throughout Future Nostalgia, but this pseudo ballad further confirms her skills.

4. Joji, “Will He”
💿 In Tongues (Deluxe) • 🏷 88rising • 📅 2018

“Will your tongue still remember the taste of my lips? / Will your shadow remember the swing of my hips? / Will your lover caress you the way that I did?” 🎵 “Will He” opens 💿 In Tongues enigmatically. It’s melancholy, indulgent, and heavy. Despite the weight carried by the sound and vibe, this 🎙 Joji record is quite beautiful and well-produced.

Joji delivers respectable vocals, singing the moody lyrics with passion and authenticity. He successfully conveys his feelings and the narrative. That narrative is ex-girl is with a new boy and it’s not him.
“Cause I don’t need to know
I just wanna make sure you’re okay (okay)
I don’t need to know
I just wanna make sure you’re all safe
All safe, all safe.”
Although a bit indulgent, all in all, “Will He” is a great start to In Tongues and a record worth listening to.

5. Céline Dion, “My Heart Will Go On” – Love Theme from Titanic
💿 Let’s Talk About Love • 🏷 Sony • 📅 1997

“Every night in my dreams / I see you; I feel you / That is how I know you go on.” Oh, the feels, the feel, the feels! There’s no way that the 🎙 Céline Dion WILL classic, 🎵 “My Heart Will Go On,” would dare miss this WILL-driven list!

“My Heart Will Go On” is timeless, period. The ‘Love Theme from Titanic’ was ubiquitous in 1997. So was the James Cameron film, 🎦 Titanic, for that matter! “My Heart Will Go On” has everything to do with the love story between Jack and Rose. Even celebrating it’s silver anniversary, the Love Theme from Titanic is still the potent tearjerker.
“Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more, you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on.”

6. Eric Church, “Heart Like a Wheel”
💿 Desperate Man • 🏷 EMI Nashville • 📅 2018

“But I got a heart like a wheel, baby, let’s go / Get in this heart like a wheel and baby, let’s roll.” Following a three-year hiatus, 🏆 Grammy-nominated country artist 🎙 Eric Church returned with his sixth studio album, 💿 Desperate Man, in 2018. 🎵 “Heart Like a Wheel” appears as the third track off Desperate Man with love playing being the central theme.

Vocally, Church remains true to his country roots, while also bringing some legit soul into the fold. The soulfulness doesn’t only come courtesy of Church’s roaring lead, but also high-flying supporting vocals, not to mention the vintage, old-school backdrop. The six-eight meter also helps to establish the feel of an old-school, mid-tempo country ballad. Lyrically, “Heart Like a Wheel” is chocked-full of commitment, despite the hurdles that might arrive. The third and final verse is a prime example.
“Can’t say there won’t be rough patches
Scratches from thorns and briars
Over or under, we’ll roll like thunder
As long as there’s tread on these tires.”

7. Natalie Cole, “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”
💿 Inseparable • 🏷 Capitol • 📅 1975

“This will be an everlasting love / This will be the one I’ve waited for / This will be the first time anyone has loved me, oh, oh, oh.” Oh, what a 🎵 “Mighty Love” as 🎙 The Spinners would describe it! There can’t be a conversation about the late, great 🎙 Natalie Cole without her ‘ace in the hole.’ Which of her many hits is her ‘ace in the hole,’ you ask? Well, from my estimations, it’s the bright, exuberant 🎵 “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”. Simply put, Natalie flies high on this jazzy, spirited, instantly recognizable soul classic. The excerpted lyrics are ICONIC!
“Hugging and squeezing
And kissing and pleasing
Together forever through rain or whatever
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah you and me.”

“This Will Be” graces one of Cole’s most important, most notable albums, 💿 Inseparable, released in 1975. Somehow, “This Will Be” is NOT Cole’s highest-peaking single on the pop charts. Regardless, this ‘THIS’ classic is by far the most decorated song of her illustrious career. It peaked at no. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 – #HIT! Also, Inseparable was a top 20 album. Cole landed a 🏆 Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance for this song, also winning one for Best New Artist of the Year. Basically, “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” is one of the greatest songs of all time!

8. Tory Lanez, “FeRRis WhEEl” (Ft. Trippie Redd)
💿 LoVe me NOw • 🏷 Interscope • 📅 2018

“We stay lit, all that shit / Damn, lil baby, what you call that shit? / That’s the red nose shawty, you a dog, lil’ bitch / Touch the damn floor with your paws, lil’ bitch.” Not the most subtle chorus there, 🎙 Trippie Redd, ‘but to each his own.’ Interestingly, 🎵 “FeRRis WhEEl” isn’t Trippie Redd’s song, despite the fact he delivers the chorus, as well as the first verse. The record actually arrives as the eighth track on 💿 LoVe me NOw, the third album by Canadian rapper and singer 🎙 Tory Lanez.

On “FeRRis WhEEl,” Tory Lanez keeps things short, just crossing the two-and-a-half-minute mark. It’s really short for Lanez, considering he only appears in the second verse. The song itself has NOTHING to do with the actual amusement park ride… Lines like “Girl you look good when you back that ass up” clarify this ain’t no kids’ ride. Instead, “FeRRis WhEEl” is sexually charged, confirmed by Urban Dictionary. Take my word for it, you’ll never think of a Ferris wheel the same way again. Also, it should be noted that Lanez ‘borrows’ stuff once again, this time, 🎵 “Wait (The Whisper Song)”.

9. Rush, “Freewill”
💿 Permanent Waves • 🏷 Anthem / UMG Recordings, Inc. • 📅 1980

“I will choose a path that’s clear, I will choose freewill.” Yep, that’s what Canadian prog-rock veterans 🎙 Rush assert on classic 🎵 “Freewill.” “Freewill” appears on their 1980 album, 💿 Permanent Waves. Late, great drummer 🎙 Neil Peart, also the lyricist for iconic band, was a humanist responsible for many of the freethinking references within the band’s music. Of course, all members of Rush – 🎙 Geddy Lee and 🎙 Alex Lifeson – are self-proclaimed atheists.

Merriam-Webster does a pretty bang-up job of defining freewill. At its simplest, freewill is “voluntary choice decision.” Adding the religious angle, free will is the “freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by divine intervention.” Basically, Rush focuses on the latter in “Freewill,” which makes perfect sense given their collective atheism. Simple as the concept is, Peart manages to give Lee some awesome, poetic, and thought-provoking lyrics, such as the fifth and final verse.
“Each of us, a cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that’s far too fleet.”

10. Michael Jackson, “Will You Be There (Theme from Free Willy)”
💿 Dangerous • 🏷 MJJ Productions • 📅 1991

“Hold me like the River Jordan / And I will then say to thee, you are my friend.” 🎵 “Will You Be There” ranks among the elite, later hits by 🎙 Michael Jackson. Long before asking us to “Carry me like you are my brother / Love me like a mother, will you be there,” the 🏆 Grammy winner had already cemented his legacy. “Will You Be There” appears on Jackson’s 1991 New Jack Swing infused album, 💿 Dangerous. That said, the version of the gem I prefer is a shortened single version that serves as the theme from 📽 Free Willy.

Michael Jackson sings incredibly, period. Sure, he always sounds awesome but on “Will You Be There,” he takes that beloved tenor (and beyond) to another level. Serving as the lead, backed by a superb gospel choir, it’s hard to listen to this record and NOT feel something. No, “Will You Be There” never mentions God or a deity, and isn’t a contemporary gospel record, but it feels like a spiritual experience. Jackson seems to be seeking someone who can and will be there for him in a world filled with adversity and lofty expectations. “When weary, tell me will you hold me? When wrong, will you scold me? When lost will you find me?” he asks. Among the most memorable sections of “Will You Be There” arrives on the powerful bridge, which precedes a modulating breakdown section. Jackson proclaims:
“Everyone’s taking control of me
Seems that the world’s got a role for me
I’m so confused, will you show to me
You’ll be there for me and care enough to bear me?”
The ad-libs that follow in the breakdown section are some of Jackson’s finest of his illustrious career. Who doesn’t love to hear him welp (“Hoo”)! “Will You Be There’ is a must-hear throwback gem that never grows old.

11. Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You”
💿 The Bodyguard – Original Soundtrack Album • 🏷 Arista • 📅 1992

“If I should stay / I would only be in your way / So I’ll go, but I know / I’ll think of you every step of the way.” Sorry to every other R&B artist who released music in 1992. Why? Well, the best R&B song of that year belongs to one woman and one woman only. Pretty amazing how Whitney Houston totally transformed 🎵 “I Will Always Love You,” a country song written by 🎙 Dolly Parton isn’t it?

There’s not much commentary needed for this record – it speaks for itself. This is the greatest of Whitney Houston’s many, many hits. At her best, who could out-perform her? The best moment is the modulation (key change), where from then on, Houston goes to a completely different level. No matter who sings this masterpiece in the future, there will only ever be one definitive, truly iconic version.
