Tank, ‘F It Up’ | Track Review
R&B artist Tank continues to show his savagery (in the bedroom) on “F It Up,” the explicit third single from his ‘Savage’ (September 29).
Despite the coolness of R&B, Tank, continues to be prolific. Despite being incredibly underrated, he’s written and recorded some great music during his career. His 2016 album, Sex Love & Pain II was disappointing, however. It suffered from trying too hard to assimilate and conform with modern urban contemporary. All indications suggest that Tank will remain “Savage” on his upcoming album, fittingly entitled, Savage. Third single “F It Up” definitely showcases the savagery of the R&B singer/songwriter.
Initially, “F It Up” sounds woozy. The production work is mysterious, almost imitating a person who’s high out of their mind. Although “F It Up” sounds odd initially, the lushness is inviting – warm. Expectedly, the title doesn’t leave much to the imagination, revealed on the sexual refrain. Certainly, there’s no censorship – the bomb is laid out there plain as day. Nonetheless, it’s easy to be hypnotized by the sensual sounds and carnal chorus.
The biggest rub is that “F It Up” lacks substance. Read the title, the first thought that comes to mind is sex. Listen to the production work, the first thing that comes to mind is sex. Listen and follow the lyrics, and the result is the same sex. Tank could broaden his horizons. There’s nothing transcendent to be found on “F It Up.” But we already knew that.
All in all, despite the aforementioned criticisms, Tank delivers his best single to date from Savage. Yes, “F It Up” is devoid of substance, but it suits Tank stylistically. It’s well-produced, flexes as far as the sensual songwriting, and Tank delivers a great vocal. “F It Up” is winning.
