Track Review: Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez, ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’
Pop singer/songwriter Charlie Puth has a knack for cheesiness. No disrespect – he seems like a nice guy – but the dude comes off as a wee bit too sensitive. Regardless, it seems to be working for him, so can’t knock the hustle. “See You Again” and “One Call Away” are prime examples of Puth “gettin’ that paper.” He’ll make some more off from “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” with some help from Selena Gomez.
“We Don’t Talk Anymore” is light, innocent sounding pop. The production work isn’t incredibly flashy, comprising of guitar and a relatively basic beat. Puth and Gomez both sound respectable, which isn’t always true of either – no shade. Gomez, to her credit, sounds better than she has on some of her own songs.
Moderately fun, it’s not far-fetched or surprising that “We Don’t Talk Anymore” has gained traction at radio. Furthermore, it’s one of the better moments from Puth’s spotty debut, Nine Track Mind. Still, “One Call Away” or “Suffer” take top honors. One of the cons is the lack of lyrical substance and thematic contrast. The ultimate point is “we don’t talk anymore” and there isn’t a deeper narrative.
Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez have cooked up a harmless, moderately-delicious hit single with “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” Will this go down as a classic? Doubtful, but its harmless dessert – gluten free. To reiterate, it’s one of the better moments from Puth’s spotty debut, Nine Track Mind.
