Billboard: Gucci Mane ‘Everybody Looking’ Debuts at No. 2
Gucci Gives A Valiant Effort
Gucci Mane gave it a valiant effort. Like the title of his comeback album, Gucci had Everybody Looking, wondering, can he unseat a god? While Gucci anticipated the best, particularly occupying the no. 1 spot on iTunes during the week of release, like so many others, he’s stuck at no. 2. Everybody Looking moved a respectable 68,000 units, though just ~63% of that total were pure sales. Still, after being in jail, recording an album in six days, and hitting no. 2? That’s #winning.
Drake Continues to Chase History
Drake, unsurprisingly, retains no. 1 for a 12th nonconsecutive week, and the third straight week during his recent stint of chart dominance. Views still amassed sub-100K units (85,000), but that’s 17,000 units better than Gucci Mane. According to Keith Caulfield, Drake is chasing the Frozen soundtrack for most weeks at no. 1.
Familiarity at the Top
Beyond Drake and Gucci, things are “all quiet on the western front” – or something like that. Twenty One Pilots’ Blurryface continues to shine after more than a year on the charts, remaining in the winner’s circle at no. 3. Rihanna (Anti) remains strong, as does the mysterious Epic AF compilation.
Sia predictably rebounds with This Is Acting (no. 6). “Cheap Thrills” is the no. 1 song in the country. Adele (25), Hamilton, Beyoncé (Lemonade) and a resurgent Meghan Trainor (Thank You) finish off the top. Consistent, but boring.
Who’s Got Next?
Who’s turn is it next to shine “bright like a diamond?” Fantasia (The Definition of), DJ Khaled (Major Key), Jake Owen (American Love), and Hillary Scott & The Scott Family (Love Remains) should make an impact. How much of an impact? Eh.
Fantasia has seen three of her four previous albums debut in the top 10. DJ Khaled has landed several top 10 albums, though 2015 effort I Changed A Lot settled for no. 12. Jake Owen has one top 10-album to date (Barefoot Blue Jean Night), while Hillary Scott has done well for herself – with Lady Antebellum that is.
Will Drake still reign? Seems like a possibility.
