Track Review: Kehlani, ‘CRZY’
Up-and-coming R&B singer Kehlani takes a page out of the Rihanna textbook with one ‘crazy’ single, fittingly titled “CRZY.”
R&B singer Kehlani crept onto the music scene back in 2015. Despite a modest arrival, she “wouldn’t be muzzled.” Her debut album, You Should Be Here, earned critical praise. After establishing herself as a critical darling, Kehlani makes her return with single, “CRZY.” How crazy is “CRZY?” It’s not really crazy at all…well, except that it’s crazy good.
“CRZY” features distinct, assertive vocals from Kehlani. While she possesses her own robust, distinct set of pipes, the first thing that comes to mind hearing “CRZY” is Rihanna. The reason is because of the repetition, gimmickry, and the feisty attitude.
“CRZY” is a mix between Rihanna’s “B*tch Better Have My Money,” “Work” and even the Barbadian’s robust interlude, “Higher.” Has K been listening to Anti? That certainly seems to be the case. Still, this isn’t about Rihanna but rather Kehlani.
“Tell ‘em, tell ‘em , tell ‘em / I go, I go, I go, crazy, crazy…live for the challenge, only make me stronger / one more reason to turn up on ‘em…”
Kehlani clearly isn’t profound, but regardless, her enthusiasm and superb voice atones for lack of depth. Clearly, there’s freshness and undeniable swag that drips from “CRZY.”
Ultimately, “CRZY” is an adrenaline rush, chocked full of attitude. Kehlani’s excellent vocals easily carry and captivate. Most of all, to reiterate, “CRZY” feels fresh; it allures.
